Camera Competition! DJI Pocket II Experience

Comments: With more and more people using video to record and show their lives, DJI Pocket2 makes it easier for us to create videos and share happiness, which may be the purpose of its existence.

I was very excited about DJI’s pocket eyes, which were released on November 29, 2018, because traditional three-axis stabilizers, even the smallest ones, take up a lot of backpack space and take a lot of time to install and flatten. It takes a few minutes, or even more than ten minutes, from the thought of shooting to the actual lifting of the camera, and the enthusiasm for shooting may be consumed. Anyone who has taken a Vlog knows how appealing a small, easy-to-use, stable camera can be.

However, there are also many reasons that prevent me from placing an order to buy Pocket besides for being poor, the Pocket has an 80-degree perspective, a 2.0 aperture, and a 1/2.3-inch CMOS… All the reasons are to persuade me, so I repeatedly jumped in the tangle of buy or not buy, and finally, two years later, I got an DJI Pocket the second generation.

Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to try out this DJI Pocket 2 camera. It measures 4*1.5 *1.18 inches and weighs 0.25lbs, which is not much bigger than your girlfriend’s lipstick. If you don’t have a girlfriend, then just forget about it.

In addition to the host, the standard version comes with a case, two phone connectors (one android, one iPhone), a cable, a small joystick, a base with a quarter screw, and a hand cord. It looks almost the same as the first generation, so what exactly is the upgrade? With these questions in mind, we will give you a comprehensive presentation in terms of shooting angle, buffing effect, focusing ability, picture quality performance, radio quality and endurance.

1.Camera Angle

Pocket generation’s Vlog shooting is most criticized for the equivalent 20mm lens. The shooting angle is really not wide enough, but the second generation gives us an equivalent 20mm lens. 20mm can accommodate more environments without excessive distortion, which is very suitable for Vlog shooting. With our hand Panasonic S5 20-60 sets of machine, the widest end is also 20mm, do a comparison, to see if there is a difference.

2.Anti-shaking effect

One of DJI Pocket’s core competitiveness is its stabilization capability. Compared with those cameras that rely on CMOS displacement or electronic algorithm to e stabilization, DJI Pocket has better stability in theory. Among the cameras we have at present, Panasonic S5 is the one with the best anti-shaking capability. Pocket 2’s anti-shaking effect can kill Panasonic S5 by the comparison of handheld walking shooting.

This time DJI also equipped Pocket 2 with a rocker like mushroom, which is more similar to the electronic stabilizer. We installed the Panasonic S5 on the Weebill-s and compared it with the Pocket 2 again. This time, the performance of the two cameras was just as good.

But the Panasonic S5 and Weebill-s are so heavy that unless they are used for work, just for daily records, it might be too cruel for user to carry them around.

3.Focusing ability

Pocket generation is made fun of cannot focus, the second generation upgrade now phase and contrast is a combination of “hybrid” focus, it is said that focusing ability is very good, we take it and SONY released this year Vlog camera, also is known for his ability to focus the ZV – 1 contrast, basically no different, perhaps because of CMOS small depth of field is larger, the difficulty of the focus.

DJI Pocket 2 has a target tracking function, which is not available in ZV-1. Double-click the screen to select the target, and its lens will rotate with the target. As long as the motion range is not too large, it can basically catch up with the target.

4.Picture quality

The second-generation CMOS was upgraded from 1/2.3 of an inch to 1/1.7 of an inch, the sensor size increased by 35%, and the pixels increased from 12 million to 64 million. Let’s take a look at its photo performance!

But in Pro mode, you have to choose between JPG and RAW, which is a little confusing.

The extra pixels, along with higher resolution, have the added benefit of digital zoom.

5.Radio effects

Sound is as important to a video as the quality of the picture. Sometimes it’s ok to have a bad picture, but it’s not ok to have a bad sound.

This time DJI Pocket 2 added “matrix stereo microphone”, there is a microphone before and after the left and right, supporting stereo recording. I think this is more important than qualitative improvement. The essence of Pocket is to carry it around and take pictures as soon as you pick it up. The camera itself has excellent radio effect, and no more extra accessories are needed to avoid violating the certain position.

In the actual test, Pocket 2’s radio quality is surprisingly good. Four microphones can achieve stereo recording, which is more than enough to meet the requirements of daily shooting radio. If you need remote radio, you can buy a set and add a wireless microphone similar to Rod Wireless Go in it.

6.Endurance and heating

Pocket 2, as a pocket camera, has a small battery capacity of only 875mAh. Unlike the Action, the battery can be replaced. Battery life is very important when you are out and about. In 2020, it seems that the test battery life will not develop the problem of heat, so let’s take the X-S10 from Fuji and do the battery life and heat test together with Pocket 2.

The same quality of shooting 4K 30P. After 30 minutes of continuous recording, Fuji X-S10 saved automatically. Then we pressed the record button again. When the total recording time reached 67 minutes, the battery ran out and the machine automatically shut down.

DJI Pocket 2 did not stop recording until 47 minutes. However, as the SD card was full, we had to reformat and continue recording until 120 minutes, when the battery ran out and the recording was automatically shut down. That’s slightly less than the official 140-minute endurance.

During the test, the temperature of Pocket 2 handle is always stable at about 34℃, while the temperature of the display screen is as high as 45℃, which is a little hot to touch.

Conclusion

After several rounds of competitions, Pocket 2’s stabilization and focusing left a deep impression on us, and the picture quality was completely acceptable. There are many other details, which we did not show, such as fast switching speed, friendly and powerful App support (MIMO), super industrial design storage scheme, etc., which can only be perceived after the actual hands-on experience.

Of course, there are a lot of things that could be improved: Could you be a little more radical and give us a 1-inch base? Can we make some breakthrough on the stability of the Z-axis? Can you change the structure of the replaceable battery? Can it be waterproof and dustproof? These regrets allow us on to have high expectations on its next generation of products.

Pocket’s product line enables DJI to develop a new camera form between micro single camera and mobile phone. Compared with micro single camera, its body is lighter, and compared with mobile phone, it has better stabilization and more comprehensive functions. As more and more people start to create videos, more and more people are willing to use videos to record and show their lives. DJI Pocket 2 enables us to create videos more easily and share happiness, which may be the meaning of its existence.
