Huawei MateBook D 15 2021 Evaluation: Far Exceeding the MX250 AMD Ryzen 9 4900H

Preface: The most comprehensive upgrade in the history of MateBook D series

A month ago, AMD’s Zen3 5000 series processor improved IPC performance by 18%, making it the best single core processor in 15 years, finally recapturing the title of the best game processor from Intel.

In the laptop area, the most powerful single core architecture is the Tiger Lake-U 11 Core TM released by Intel two months ago. Today, the Huawei MateBook D 15 2021 officially goes on sale, bringing the biggest upgrade in the history of the series. It is powered by the Tiger Lak-U core TMI7-1165G7 processor, and not only that, but also a full new generation of NVIDIA® GeForce® MX450 independent graphics card.

1.11th Generation Core TMI7-1165G7 processor

The MateBook D 15 2021 is powered by Intel’s latest i7-1165G7 processor. How much better is the MateBook D 15 2020’s I5-10510U? let’s have a look at the chart below.

Compared with i7-10510U, the new i7-1165G7 uses Intel’s 10nm process. Although it is also a 4-core 8-thread, the number of second-level caches has been increased from 1MB to 5MB, which is five times, and the third-level caches have been increased from 8MB to 12MB.

Appearance: all metal body + three sides narrow frame

The A side of the frosted metal looks fairly clean, with only A “HUWEI” Logo.

There is A fully functional USB Type-C port on the left side, which is also the charging port of the laptop, and A USB-A 3.0 and an HDMI video output interface.

On the right side, there is A 0.14inch in-one headphone interface and two USB-A 3.0 ports.

CPU performance test: the mobile processor with the strongest single core performance

3.Color accuracy

Color accuracy: Delta-E is used to quantify the color difference between different colors. Delta-e can specify what is the tolerable range of people’s perception. Generally speaking, the change of delta-E between 3 and 6 is acceptable.

The average delta-E on the 15.6-inch screen in the MateBook D 15 2021 is 1.39, which is a very good performance. The highest delta-E value is 4.16 and the lowest is 0.33.

 

4.Disk performance test

The MateBook D 15 2021 uses a PM981 512GB SSD from Samsung, which is Samsung’s SSD for the high-end OEM market, as opposed to the Retail version of the Samsung 970 EVO 500GB. In the CrystalDiskMark test, sequential read/write speeds reached 3403MB/s and 2987MB/s, respectively, which were already at the top of the PCIe 3.0 SSD.

The performance release of SSDS is also closely related to CPU performance, and the I7-1165G7 is credited with the high score of PM981 here.

 

5.Memory performance test

The MateBook D 15 2021 motherboard has been integrated with a dual-channel 16GB Samsung DDR4 3200MHz of ram at 22-22-22-48 CR1.

AIDA64 was used for memory cache test, and the measured read, write, and copy bandwidth were respectively 44538MB/s, 43869MB/s, and 35684MB/s, with a delay of 88.8 ns.

 

Game performance test: far exceeding the MX250 9 4900H

1. 3D mark

The MateBook D 15 is a full health version of the MX450 with a 28W TDP. In the 3DMark Time Spy test, the graphics score was 1972, the maximum runtime frequency was 1845MHz, and the maximum temperature was 65 degrees.

Temperature and endurance test: The temperature of 35W for double testing is less than 80 degrees

 

1.Test the CPU

AIDA64 FPU was used for the test. The room temperature was 20 degrees, and the test was carried out in high-energy mode.

After 5 minutes of the testing, the power consumption of i7-1165G7 remained stable at 26W, the temperature was a little up to 96 degrees, and the whole core frequency of the toaster was 3.1ghz.

 

2.Double test

Using FurMark to load the CPU and GPU at the same time, it was found that the power consumption of the processor was reduced to 13.5 W and the temperature was very low, only 77 degrees. However, the MX450 has been kept in a full battery state of 28W, the toaster frequency is 1800MHz, the GPU occupancy rate is stable at 96% ~ 100%, and the temperature is only 72 degrees.

The power consumption of the double roast should be more than 35W, which is not bad.

 

3.Endurance test

The MateBook D 15 2021 has a 42Wh lithium battery built in, and we used the PCMark 10 to test the battery life of the laptop.

The scenario selected for the test was PCMark 10’s modern office, the power mode was “energy-saving mode”, all other processes were turned off during the test, the network connection was turned off, and the screen brightness was set to 50%.

Under the PCMark 10 modern office scene, the endurance test result is just 6 hours, which can only be described as normal. Based on the normal daily use intensity, there is no big problem in supporting a day’s mobile office.

 

Summary: the starting price of 779 dollars makes it hard to find a flaw

There are at least two points that the author agrees with when enterprises like Huawei enter the laptop field:

First of all, all slim and light models should use type-C charging head, which can not only charge laptops, but also act as quick charging head for mobile phones. In contrast, some traditional top-line laptop manufacturers and a number of slim and light models still stick with the old round port power adapter, which is bulky and adds to the travel weight by bringing a mobile phone charger when you go out.

The second point is Huawei sharing. This is a cross-system transmission technology pioneered by Huawei, which makes it easy to share data between mobile phones and laptops. On the basis of the touch transmission technology, Huawei also developed the “multi-screen collaboration” technology, which integrates the MateBook and mobile phone systems, so that the keyboard and mouse of the laptop can become peripherals of the mobile phone. This technology can be said to be the exclusive benefit of Huawei users.

Although many laptop manufacturers have started to imitate it, Huawei Share is still the best in terms of practical experience, and it is far ahead of other similar technologies.

 

Let’s go back to the point.

In the laptop area, the 11th generation low-power core processor is the undisputed single core processor with the strongest performance. The i7-1165G7 is far from the low-power processors of the past, with the single-core performance of top desktop processors and the fastest responsiveness, both in terms of application startup speed and computing speed of office software.

An obvious example is that Samsung’S PM981 512GB SSD scores less than 4000 on most slim and light laptops. With the help of I7-1165G7, the score of MateBook D 15 2021 AS SSD BenchMark is close to 5000. Such performance can only be achieved on top game books or desktop platforms in the past, but now i7-1165G7 can also achieve it.

In terms of game performance, GeForce MX450 outperforms GeForce MX250 by around 70% with 896 Turing cores. AMD’s most powerful mobile APU, the 94900H, is also 40 percent behind, as the latter is a standard processor.

It is hard to find a flaw for the MateBook D 15 2021 after a full upgrade, and with a starting price of 809 dollars, it is 20 bucks cheaper than its predecessor, making it one of the best 11-generation core models to buy in the same price range.
